Abstract Bayesian phylogenetic methods provide a set of tools to efficiently evaluate large linguistic datasets by reconstructing phylogenies—family trees—that represent the history language families. These powerful way test hypotheses about prehistory, regarding subgrouping, origins, expansion, and timing languages their speakers. Through phylogenetics, we gain insights into process evolution in general how fast individual features change particular. This article introduces phylogenetics as applied languages. We describe substitution models for cognate evolution, molecular clock evolutionary rate along branches tree, tree generating processes suitable data. explain find best-suited model using path sampling or nested sampling. The theoretical background these is supplemented practical tutorial describing up analysis software tool BEAST2.
